Allan Storer

Artist, painter in oils on canvas, Cornish land and seascapes, impasto, palette knife effect.
All art is an abstraction to some extent and a work which is inclusive of both abstract and human elements, the unconscious and conscious, an inner and outer dimension may well have a fuller and deeper meaning.
I want my work to have a vitality of its own, not necessarily representational or concerned wholly with movement or physical action, but an intense energy, pent up! Independent of the image it may represent.
I am interested in the human figure and through life drawing and life painting I observe the principals and natural laws of form and rhythm relevant to both land and seascapes.
Oil paint is the medium itself. Thick oil paint!, its materiality and power of texture is important to me allowing both and paint to interlock, so the image is the paint and the paint is the image. An Inner and outer response pinned on canvas; idea and technique being one and the same.
Painting with a palette knife forces me to loosen up and has the dimension and quality I like, where colour, shape and value translate feelings into the visual and tell the story on an impasto surface.
These principals and nature's elemental forces shape my painting style, particularly in the remote Cornwall and Wales landscapes where I am intuitively drawn; an environment where human presence is very little in evidence. Light and storms sweep in. Colossal energy and indifferent natural forces have formed the lines and granite of these ancient coastlines.

I am Norwegian by birth and some of my most cherished childhood memories includes constructing igloos and sculptures from ice and snow as well as my first water colour painting of a thunderous evening sky. It helped lay the foundation for my fascination with the mirror reflection between the human being and Nature. For me this brings a true sense of awe and wonder. Why? It is because I experience it very much as a living dialogue between several realms of existence. This mysterious space filled with the ever flowing stream of sense phenomena, with its resource of extraordinary transformative powers - forceful and dramatic as well as gentle and harmonious. Through my work, both in sculpture and painting, I seek entry into this place of creativity. Through ongoing observations and reflections on what I see and feel in the outer world, my inspiration sparks off in the form of inner living pictures and evolving images. This creates the foundation from which the artistic process begins.

Eloise Wall

Art by Eloise Wall picture maker

I am a picture maker. I study nature and people and places I love and translate what I see to a tangible form. This year my work has mostly centred on Falmouth and its surrounds, the boats I like, and places on the Helford. Next year I hope to showcase some figurative and still life work in other mediums. This is my first year of working solely as an artist and the success of this year has encouraged me to advertise myself for at least another year!

Ges Wilson

'Last Evening Wave' oil on canvas by Ges Wilson

I make work that is either figurative or semi abstract landscape, both arising from the act of drawing, not as an observed record – but trying to communicate experience, memory and emotion.
It is important not to control too much, so allowing an intuitive response to the unexpected and to keep the energy alive in the painting. Processes are important and I may use layering and mixed media, allowing materials and processes to reveal images that communicates my experience to the viewer.
Work is usually completed in my studio in an attempt to avoid unnecessary detail and literal interpretation when faced with the subject. The Penwith environment of high moors, harbours and coastline; my experiences of sailing and surfing – these are the subjects I explore in paint, drawing and print. Being too literal leave no mystery for the viewer, also the mark making must keep life in the image.

Examples of my work can be seen on-line at the Art Space Gallery and the St Ives Society of Artists.

Hannah Hughes Gallery

Painting by Hannah Hughes

Born in Cornwall, and having initially lived near St Just in the far west of the county, Hannah has been inspired by the Cornish landscape and its rugged coastline throughout her life. In her work she tries to capture iconic images from around Cornwall often drawing back to the maritime and moorland scenes that so affected her as a child. Compositions come from around the Cornish landscape, particularly West Penwith, the St Agnes area, and the Isles of Scilly.
Currently studying geology at Oxford University, Hannah draws from this knowledge in an attempt to better understand what makes a landscape what it is. Landscapes such as the dramatic cliffs from across the region and the islands of Scilly can all be distinguished by what lies beneath, characterising the area's topography and plant life, and in turn its hue and structure.
Hannah predominantly uses acrylic, gouache, and occasionally mixed media to recreate the bright colours and clear light for which the south west is renowned. Pencil sketches are also used to reduce a scene down to its primary components.

Ian Griffiths wildlife artist

Wildlife artist.
Griff’s paintings, in the main, depict the world of wildlife as part of the overall landscape whether this is a small corner or a larger vista. He works mainly in smooth flow acrylics which are used for their own properties building up many glazes but also using them more opaquely, he also uses many different mediums especially in the field. Since turning full time in 2007 Griff has featured in several magazines including Wildscape, Birds Illustrated and Artists and Illustrators, as well as exhibiting throughout UK and at the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum in New Jersey, as part of the Juried Artists for Conservation exhibition in 2008. Melanie Guy

Primarily, I am an artist committed to self expression through my medium. My subject matter is intrinsically linked to the environment and our mistreatment of it, by expressing memories and encounters of real experiences of living on the water and cruising at sea. My work reflects light and creates a visual animation by the forming methods that I use for the metal, I draw with light and in a metaphorical sense, the effect of this reflects a primal scream on Nature's behalf.

Currently I make work in pewter extending the possibilities of the material into art forms. Much of my work is sculptural relief, suitable for the domestic or the corporate market. Please see my cv on my website. I use innovative methods to colour the metal and create different products from it. Some work falls within the designer-crafts genre. I am a fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and exhibit work with them regularly.

I also design for a playground building company which specialises in sustainably sourced material, mostly wood. We make especially excitingly creative constructions for the natural play environment.

Melanie McDonald

Paintings of Cornwall - I gain much of my inspiration from the Cornish landscape - in particular beaches and the sea in Cornwall. I especially love North Cornwall; my paintings often focus on Padstow, Polzeath Beach and Rock. Each time I visit Cornwall, I’m always drawn to the north coast for ideas for more paintings. The Camel Estuary and Daymer Bay near Padstow in Cornwall are also continuing reference points.
Surfer Paintings - I used to live next to Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall, and walked my dog there everyday. I began to get very interested in the surfers and the shapes of their surfboards against the background of sea and sky. Over the last 2 years, I have painted a series of surfer paintings and they are a continuing passion of mine.

Miss Elvy's Cabinet of Curiosities

My work is shamelessly eclectic and draws heavily on early museum collection for inspiration. This perfectly contextualises the notions of times past, creatures forgotten and the ethnography of different times and cultures. I am fascinated by the earliest museums that were known as cabinets of curiosity held by the wealthiest of collectors. Whole rooms filled with fascinating objects ranging from paintings, drawings, books, natural objects, taxidermy, ethnographic finds from around the globe, pottery, metal objects, folk curiosities and medical instruments and anomalies preserved in jars. From origins in the 17th century a Victorian revival brought us even more fascination with collecting and categorising and with it a penchant for the strange and unusual and often humorous.
So welcome to my Cabinet of Curiosities, where there is something for everyone to delight in.

Sara Pound

Sunshine out of the blue - Chalk Pastel by Sara Pound

“Like many before, and many more to follow, I feel ‘connected’ here – whether it’s the Cornish landscape, that unmistakable smell of the sea and panoramic skies, windswept beaches with hidden harbours, or just the kiss of a breeze with a promise of summer…………or rain to come…………..it just sweeps me away!”
I use whatever the subject dictates – Inks, chalk pastels, watercolours and mixed media Landscapes, seascapes, boats, flowers and still life ………..
Transforming a blank piece of paper? …………. A magical process, even if I can’t always find the wand! or the right spell! ……… I always come back!
I belong to a group of artists based in St Ives, Cornwall, called Taking Space and have been exhibiting with them all over Cornwall for the last 3 years. Seeing other artist’s work and meeting them always interests me, whether it stimulates the creative juices or just conversation! There’s no such thing as an original – we all borrow from each other! That’s why art is always evolving………and anyone can do it…………….

Painting by Shelagh May

Working from my studio in Falmouth with views of the harbour for inspiration, I paint in oils and aim to create powerful, haunting images through the use of contrasting elements, focusing in particular upon the effects of light and shade, and the relationships between man-made structures - or individuals - and their environment. My canvasses depict a strange silent world in which time stands still.

Soulheart

My art has been a therapeutic process. Created from my minds eye, and expression of self and how i see some of the world around me. I hope my work evokes something in others. a belief that we should and can feel every part of ourselves no matter how afraid we are to look. All of my work is oil on canvas and prints of these.

Garden Mosaic by Sue Smith

I create garden mosaics, using recycled stained glass and mirrors. The stained glass is worked directly onto the mirrors to give better reflection and depth of colour, making the glass change shade in different lights and at different angles. They can be used as wall panels, a feature among climbing plants, or be placed in a gloomy corner – adding light, interest and creating a hint of “The Secret Garden” behind.

Suzy Sharpe Painter and Printmaker

Print by artist Suzy Sharpe

I am painter and printmaker also running workshops and offering tuition to individuals and small groups of all ages, I also produce a range of greetings cards, prints and work to commission on occasion.
I make work about animals and my environment. My work often looks at the questions arising from painting a portrait of an animal such as a chicken, duck or sheep. Is it an important animal? What effect does the painting have on the status of the animal? What value is placed on the subject and the art work? The questions have been asked before but today the answers may be different.
My work indulges my fascination with birds and animals, the depth of feeling towards them and the roles that they play throughout our symbiotic relationship via story telling, folk lore, mythology, fable and a result of every day encounters.

Towans Environmental Artist

Towans Environmental Artwork

Like many I have become concerned by our wastefulness and 'throw away' culture as I feel we have become so detached from nature and life. My intention with my ART is to draw on recycled elements found on the beach such as driftwood, old rope, pieces of coloured plastic, old fruit/nut stones, etc, I hope I achieve, and developed an understanding with recycled materials, be they naturally organic or man-made debri from the sea, so by creating something environmentally beautiful. Commissions taken.
