Ges Wilson

'Last Evening Wave' oil on canvas by Ges Wilson

I make work that is either figurative or semi abstract landscape, both arising from the act of drawing, not as an observed record – but trying to communicate experience, memory and emotion.
It is important not to control too much, so allowing an intuitive response to the unexpected and to keep the energy alive in the painting. Processes are important and I may use layering and mixed media, allowing materials and processes to reveal images that communicates my experience to the viewer.
Work is usually completed in my studio in an attempt to avoid unnecessary detail and literal interpretation when faced with the subject. The Penwith environment of high moors, harbours and coastline; my experiences of sailing and surfing – these are the subjects I explore in paint, drawing and print. Being too literal leave no mystery for the viewer, also the mark making must keep life in the image.

Examples of my work can be seen on-line at the Art Space Gallery and the St Ives Society of Artists.

Hannah Hughes Gallery

Painting by Hannah Hughes

Born in Cornwall, and having initially lived near St Just in the far west of the county, Hannah has been inspired by the Cornish landscape and its rugged coastline throughout her life. In her work she tries to capture iconic images from around Cornwall often drawing back to the maritime and moorland scenes that so affected her as a child. Compositions come from around the Cornish landscape, particularly West Penwith, the St Agnes area, and the Isles of Scilly.
Currently studying geology at Oxford University, Hannah draws from this knowledge in an attempt to better understand what makes a landscape what it is. Landscapes such as the dramatic cliffs from across the region and the islands of Scilly can all be distinguished by what lies beneath, characterising the area's topography and plant life, and in turn its hue and structure.
Hannah predominantly uses acrylic, gouache, and occasionally mixed media to recreate the bright colours and clear light for which the south west is renowned. Pencil sketches are also used to reduce a scene down to its primary components.

Ian 'Griff' Griffiths

Ian Griffiths wildlife artist

Wildlife artist.
Griff’s paintings, in the main, depict the world of wildlife as part of the overall landscape whether this is a small corner or a larger vista. A painting is normally inspired by the landscape, or a small part of it, then with many hours observation and field sketches develop into a complete painting. He works mainly in smooth flow acrylics which are used for their own properties building up many glazes but also using them more opaquely, he also uses many different mediums especially in the field. Since turning full time in 2007 Griff has featured in several magazines including Wildscape, Birds Illustrated and Artists and Illustrators, as well as exhibiting throughout UK and at the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum in New Jersey, as part of the Juried Artists for Conservation exhibition in 2008. Melanie Guy

Primarily, I am an artist committed to self expression through my medium. My subject matter is intrinsically linked to the environment and our mistreatment of it, by expressing memories and encounters of real experiences of living on the water and cruising at sea. My work reflects light and creates a visual animation by the forming methods that I use for the metal, I draw with light and in a metaphorical sense, the effect of this reflects a primal scream on Nature's behalf.

Currently I make work in pewter extending the possibilities of the material into art forms. Much of my work is sculptural relief, suitable for the domestic or the corporate market. Please see my cv on my website. I use innovative methods to colour the metal and create different products from it. Some work falls within the designer-crafts genre. I am a fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and exhibit work with them regularly.

I also design for a playground building company which specialises in sustainably sourced material, mostly wood. We make especially excitingly creative constructions for the natural play environment.

Melanie McDonald

Paintings of Cornwall - I gain much of my inspiration from the Cornish landscape - in particular beaches and the sea in Cornwall. I especially love North Cornwall; my paintings often focus on Padstow, Polzeath Beach and Rock. Each time I visit Cornwall, I’m always drawn to the north coast for ideas for more paintings. The Camel Estuary and Daymer Bay near Padstow in Cornwall are also continuing reference points.
Surfer Paintings - I used to live next to Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall, and walked my dog there everyday. I began to get very interested in the surfers and the shapes of their surfboards against the background of sea and sky. Over the last 2 years, I have painted a series of surfer paintings and they are a continuing passion of mine.

Sara Pound

Sunshine out of the blue - Chalk Pastel by Sara Pound

“Like many before, and many more to follow, I feel ‘connected’ here – whether it’s the Cornish landscape, that unmistakable smell of the sea and panoramic skies, windswept beaches with hidden harbours, or just the kiss of a breeze with a promise of summer…………or rain to come…………..it just sweeps me away!”
I use whatever the subject dictates – Inks, chalk pastels, watercolours and mixed media Landscapes, seascapes, boats, flowers and still life ………..
Transforming a blank piece of paper? …………. A magical process, even if I can’t always find the wand! or the right spell! ……… I always come back!
I belong to a group of artists based in St Ives, Cornwall, called Taking Space and have been exhibiting with them all over Cornwall for the last 3 years. Seeing other artist’s work and meeting them always interests me, whether it stimulates the creative juices or just conversation! There’s no such thing as an original – we all borrow from each other! That’s why art is always evolving………and anyone can do it…………….

Suzy Sharpe Painter and Printmaker

Print by artist Suzy Sharpe

I am painter and printmaker also running workshops and offering tuition to individuals and small groups of all ages, I also produce a range of greetings cards, prints and work to commission on occasion.
I make work about animals and my environment. My work often looks at the questions arising from painting a portrait of an animal such as a chicken, duck or sheep. Is it an important animal? What effect does the painting have on the status of the animal? What value is placed on the subject and the art work? The questions have been asked before but today the answers may be different.
My work indulges my fascination with birds and animals, the depth of feeling towards them and the roles that they play throughout our symbiotic relationship via story telling, folk lore, mythology, fable and a result of every day encounters.
