Exploring Colour Course
Thursday, 5th July 2018 until Friday, 6th July 2018
Luke Frost is well known for his exciting use of colour and comes from a line of celebrated colourists including his grandfather Sir Terry Frost and his father Anthony. This exciting course explores how to capture, mix and combine found colours with paint.
Web site: www.newlynartschool.co.uk
The course starts with a session down at Newlyn Harbour where Luke will help students to explore the process of making studies from the colours and forms found among the surrounding fishing boats, empty crates, nets, sea and harbour walls. Returning to the school the group will be given a series of exercises to help them approach colour contrasting and combining. Each student will tackle this differently some focusing closely on the colours and forms recorded down in the harbour while others may choose to work in a more abstract way.
Luke will discuss his approach to painting with some examples of his work to hand and with lots of art books and exhibition catalogues on modern and contemporary artists he will help students to understand how a number of well known artists have explored colour in their work such as John Hoyland and Patrick Heron among others.
Much of the course will be hands on with a huge array of mixed pots of paints shared between the group so they can dart back and forth between the colours and their work all the time being encouraged to explore how colours are informed by those around them.
The course also includes experimenting with coloured paint applied to different surfaces from paper and board through to aluminium and their impact on painted colour.
