That Continuous Thing: Artists and the Ceramics Studio, 1920 – Today

Friday, 31st March 2017 until Sunday, 3rd September 2017

Exploring the diverse forms, energies and locations that define the modern ceramics studio.
The ceramics studio has always been a place where tradition meets experimentation. Spanning 100 years, this exhibition explores the diverse forms, energies and locations that define the modern studio. Ranging from the rise of studio pottery in the 1910s to a number of new commissions by a young generation of UK-based artists, That Continuous Thing – a quote from the American artist Peter Voulkos – traces the changing shape of the ceramics studio over the last century.
Opening with exchange between Japan and the UK in the 1910s and ’20s through the emergence of studio potters such as Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada (who moved from Japan to St Ives in 1920), William Staite Murray and Dora Billington, the exhibition leads on to the Californian ‘clay revolution’ of the 1950s and ‘60s, with sculptures by the pioneering sculptor Voulkos and his students, including Ken Price, Rudy Autio and Ron Nagle. A specially commissioned series of ceramic sculptures by the young British artist Jesse Wine will be included in response to the display. The final section of the exhibition, developed with artist Aaron Angell, recalls artists working in London in the ‘70s and 80s, celebrating the experimental work of Gillian Lowndes, Richard Slee and other ‘hand-building’ contemporaries. These will be shown alongside a presentation of works by a number artists – including Anthea Hamilton – made over the last three years at Angell’s London-based Troy Town Art Pottery, which he describes as ‘a radical and psychedelic workshop for artists’.
Supported by the Victoria and Albert Museum, Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, Japan Foundation and Idlewild Trust.

Jessica Warboys

Friday, 31st March 2017 until Sunday, 3rd September 2017

Jessica Warboys will fill the sea-facing galleries at Tate St Ives with specially commissioned work, alongside films, sculptures and large-scale paintings.
Her work is informed by personal or collective memories – historical, mythical or fictional – and this solo show will consider her use of symbolism, form and her approach to landscape.
Warboys often employs natural elements in making her works. The exhibition will feature specially commissioned Sea Paintings, which will immerse the galleries overlooking Porthmeor Beach, in floor-to-ceiling colour. Made on the Zennor coast, near St Ives, these enormous unframed canvases have pigment applied directly on them before being submerged in the waves. They are a physical document of Warboys’ collaboration with the sea, but will provide a backdrop to several new sculptures in the lower gallery. An installation of objects that reoccur across Warboys’ practice in film, performance and exhibitions, will be designed for the showcase. New forms and paintings will be also included in this one-off playful installation.

April up-cycled Sparkly Jewellery Making Workshops

Thursday, 6th April 2017

Sparklylynne will be hosting workshops every Thursday evening in April.
7pm till 10pm
Do you: want to make something wonderful, fabulous and up-cycled using beads and things?
Do you have grannies pearls, a necklace that your mum gave you or a broken piece of special jewellery lying in a drawer somewhere, that you don't wear but you don't want to throw it away as it has sentimental value and special memories?
Do you have your own or your children's toys that you can't bear to throw away or give to charity, hiding in a cupboard?
Would you like: to learn how to transform them into something new that you can wear, take on new adventures and form new memories with?
Would you like to meet new people (or bring you own friends) and spend a very chilled out creative evening - even sipping cocktails and eating canapes if that helps you with the making process.
How: bring your own precious treasures to one of 'sparklylynne's' April workshops, use some of her hoarded beauties and learn how to make something that you would wear again.
NB. Workshops cost £15 and are taking place in Picnic, Falmouth and Jo is laying on yummy treats to help inspiration flow. Please book early to avoid disappointment as classes will be fairly small.
There is a discount if you would like to book in for more than 1 workshop.
PS. Don't be put off if you don't wear big necklaces: the idea is to make something new from your own broken treasure so you can make a necklace that is smaller in scale than sparklylynne tends to make.
Visit our Facebook events page, our Facebook page, find us on Instagram. or visit sparklylynne's website.

April up-cycled Sparkly Jewellery Making Workshops

Thursday, 13th April 2017

Cornwall Art Fair

Friday, 26th May 2017 until Sunday, 28th May 2017

Share you passion - Live your art
The idea for the Cornwall Art fair was born out of a realisation that there is a disparity between the amount of quality artists based in Cornwall and the opportunities for them to showcase their work in a central place and meet potential buyers and network together.
This art exhibition aims to promote the vast talent of established and emerging Cornish artisans by providing an avenue for their creations.
Empowering pieces such as paintings and jewellery encourages a dialogue of culture and inspiration between local artists and visitors alike.
Be a part of a celebration of creativity, passion, and dedication brought about by highly skilled artists proudly representing Cornwall.

Royal Cornwall Show 2017

Thursday, 8th June 2017 until Saturday, 10th June 2017

Interested in crafts? Planning a wedding? Want to shop in Wadebridge town centre? Is woodland your thing?
Whatever your interest, we aim to make you very welcome here.
There’s something for every member of the family at the Royal Cornwall Show.
It’s the county’s biggest annual event and is brim-full of exhibits and activities which offer so much in the way of entertainment, competition, information, shopping and all that’s best in food and farming.
It's a time and place to meet old friends, conduct business, enjoy Cornwall in all its glory and to welcome thousands of visitors from outside our county.
This is a top agricultural show which attracts increasing numbers of animals, entered into the hundreds of classes which are refined each year. And year on year people travel from further and further afield in the hope of coming away with an award.
Dog and goat sections; rare breed classes. A top flower show and thriving countryside area. Rabbits, cage birds, cavies - even bees get noticed here!
We support and promote Cornish-grown and Cornish-produced food both in the trade section and in our own cafes and restaurants.
Main ring entertainment is mounted on a grand scale and the traditional steam fair is a colourful extravaganza; there are stages and avenues alive with music, song and dance.
You can come to the Royal Cornwall Show with a single-minded ambition to buy a tractor or a car. Here is where you will see them all on display.

Once upon a time there were four little rabbits…

Saturday, 15th July 2017

Quantum Theatre – Once upon a time there were four little rabbits…
Meet Beatrix Potter as she tells us her very first tale of Peter Rabbit, who knows only too well that he is not to go into Mr McGregor’s garden, (especially as it was there that his father met his untimely end!)  But Peter cannot resist….. and it’s only after several nasty scrapes and minus all his clothes that he finally escapes home to a severe telling-off from his mother.
But Peter doesn’t learn his lesson and with his cousin Benjamin returns to the garden to recover his lost clothing.  This time, however, there’s more danger on the prowl in the shape of Mr McGregor’s cat.  Will Benjamin’s father come to the rescue in time and what will Mr McGregor make of those little footprints in his garden?
Follow the scrapes and escapades of all your favourite characters from the Peter Rabbit tales in Quantum Theatre’s delightful new production; a magical and enchanting experience for young and old alike.

Baroque Theatre Comedy Triple Bill!

Thursday, 20th July 2017

Baroque Theatre return to Penlee in 2017 with a triple comedy bill!
A Jolly Sinister Jape (by Elliot Strange)
A pastiche 1920’s thriller with a plot that defies description. This is Famous Five fun for adults as Stubby, Ophelia, Biffy and Fatty find themselves trapped in a mysterious house during a thunderstorm. Is this someone’s idea of a jape? Or is something far more sinister going on? All is revealed in this madcap comedy set in the Roaring Twenties. It’s fast and furious with a liberal sprinkling of hilarious period slang, along with mystery and thrills.
Last Tango in Little Grimley (by David Tristram)
Membership of the local amateur dramatic society has dwindled to four and the audiences aren’t much bigger. If they don’t come up with some rent money soon, they’re going to be thrown out. Time for dramatic action. “There’s only one thing that sells tickets these days” argues Gordon the Chairman. “Sex!”  But how will the locals react to the promise of a sizzling sex comedy? All is revealed in this hilarious play and thus begins the chaotic build-up to an evening of extraordinary home-grown drama – an evening the locals would never forget!
Last Panto in Little Grimley (by David Tristram)
Sequel to Last Tango in Little Grimley, Last Panto in Little Grimley features the same incompetent characters. Gordon, Margaret, Joyce and Bernard tackle the Christmas Pantomime with predictable riotous results. It’s Dick Whittington…but not as you know it!
