Kidz R Us
Forget the school play and the village concert, Kidz R Us takes youth theatre to a whole different level. Based at St Ives Theatre, Kidz R Us is a remarkable company, which developed out of a one off concert in aid of Save the Children in 1993.
So popular was the event that the group reformed and staged a full production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the world famous Minack Theatre which won the award for the best show of the year, and from this, Kidz was born.
Fifteen years and 48 shows later, Kidz has a membership of 100 young people, and as many more adults to support them and has gone from strength to strength, winning numerous awards, performing at the London Palladium and the Albert Hall, and having regular invitations to perform at the Minack.
The secret of Kidz’ success is their constant search for excellence in all they do, while making the learning process fun. They recently staged the amateur world premiere of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Likes of Us” to great acclaim. Sir Tim Rice, who attended the premiere praised the sell-out production as “absolutely terrific”.
This achievement is made possible by an army of over 100 volunteers who take on all the roles that you would find in a professional theatre. The backstage crew is made-up mainly of parents and local people with little previous experience, who work hard to achieve the best possible results for the Kidz.
To support this, Kidz R Us offers regular training courses and workshops in specialist aspects of theatre such as lighting and sound design, costume making, stage management and stage make-up and also runs a regular theatre crafts workshop on a Tuesday morning called ‘Crafty Sew n Sews’, which is open to everyone and is free.
Kidz also attract new graduates from a range of backgrounds who come to gain valuable work experience in a well-equipped 320 seat theatre and share their skills with our volunteers.
Kidz R Us is looking for volunteer hairdressers, stage-hands, scenery painters, box office staff, technical staff, front of house staff and many more new roles in order to ensure the success of future productions and give opportunities to as many people as possible.
If you want to be involved in their exciting new shows and experience the buzz of working in a busy theatre, contact Kidz R Us and see what opportunities they can offer you.
